2008 Washington DC Chapter Inc, NRHS Digital Image Contest Rules and Entry Form
Date of contest: October 17, 2008, at the chapter membership meeting
The
contest is open to all Washington DC Chapter members who have paid their
2008 dues. The Membership Chairman, whose decision will be final, will settle
any eligibility dispute.
All
entries must be received no later than the September 20, 2008, picnic meeting.
Entries will be accepted at all regular membership meetings by the Contest
Chairman, or his designated representative, or by mail. Entries sent by mail
must be post marked not later than September 20, 2008 in order to be eligible.
Entries sent by mail are done so at the risk of the sender. No entries will
be accepted at the October 17th meeting. Entries will not be accepted by
E-mail.

All
entry media will be returned to the contestants after the contest is
completed.
- THE RULES
- 1. All digital images submitted must have been taken with a digital camera. No
scanned slides, negatives or prints will be accepted except in the special vintage
categories.
- 2. Rules for the special vintage categories:
- A. The images must be scanned from photographic
slides, negatives or prints.
- B. All photographic images must have been
taken in 1995 or earlier . No exceptions are permitted.
- C. Both USA and foreign images can be entered in
the vintage categories.
- D. These scanned photographic images will have
the same rules apply as to cropping, color
correction and changes as defined below in rule 4.
- 3. No more than 3 digital images may be entered in any one category.
The maximum number of images which can be submitted in the contest
are 18.
- 4. Digital images can be cropped or color corrected only. Not acceptable
are images which have had major color changes , changing a day scene
into a night scene, photo montages, multiple images being digitally
spliced together, etc..
- 5. All digital images submitted must on a CD or DVD disk, or a flash
drive with a USB connector. Your name, address and phone number should
be written on the disks.
- 6. The maximum individual image file size must not exceed 2.5 MB.
- 7. Images will be accepted in the following formats: JPEG, TIFF and
GIF. No RAW files accepted.
- 8. All images must be virus free.
- 9. The CD, DVD or flash drive must be accompanied with a completed
Digital Image Contest entry form which provides your name/address/phone
and E-mail address. The following information is required for each
entry listed on the form. See example:

Note:
We ask that you include your initials as part of the file name.
- 10. All digital images submitted must have been taken by the contestant.
- 11. All digital images, except those entered in Categories 3 or 5
must have been taken in daylight.
- 12. All digital images except those entered in Category 5 must have
been taken in the United States. All other geographic locations must
be entered in Category 5 Foreign.
- 13. There must be a minimum of two contestants in any given category
with a total of 4 images for the category to be included in the contest.
- 14. Any issues or disputes regarding the contest rules or eligibility
of the entries must be directed to the Digital Image Contest Chairman
for resolution.
- WINNERS AND PRIZES
- 1. The winners will be selected by popular vote ballot at the October
17th membership meeting. Voting is open to all members and guests
at that meeting. The winners will be announced at the December 19, 2008
membership meeting after the first place winners in each category will
be projected in a run-off contest to determine first, second and third
places in the Grand Prize competition.
- 2. The prizes are as follows:
- First place Grand prize is $50.00
- Second place Grand Prize is $25.00
- Third place Grand Prize is $10.00
- 3. In case of ties, winners will share the prize money. One person
may win more than one cash prize.
- 4. The Digital Image Contest Chairman may enter the contest, but
will not count any of the ballots to determine the winners.
- 5. All ballots will be counted by members of the chapter who have
not entered the contest.
CATEGORIES
1. General Railroading (USA): Any subjects not covered in any of
the categories provided below.
Included are railroad structures, rolling stock, cabooses, coaling
towers, work equipment. Also included in this category are railroad
equipment which does not fall into the below listed categories
such as track speeders, cranes, weed spraying trains, track inspection
trains, Sperry Rail cars and other such unusual non-passenger/non
freight trains. Motive power must not be featured in this category.
2. Chapter Life/Dover Harbor (USA): Any digital image taken of
the Dover Harbor or of a chapter activity.
3. Night and Indoor (USA): Any subjects photographed at night
or indoors with artificial or available natural light. Images
entered into this category must appear to have been taken after
sunset, with mostly black skies. Reminder: digitally enhanced
images taken in daylight but altered to look like a night or
twilight scene will not be accepted.
4. Steam (USA): all images with any type of train (passenger
or freight) powered by steam locomotives. Can include mainline,
branch line or tourist trains.
5. Foreign: All scenes taken outside of the United States. This
includes all types of motive power and trains, railroad stations,
work equipment, interurbans, trolleys, etc., taken in daylight
or at night. All foreign countries including Canada and Mexico
are to be included in this category.
6. Light Electric (USA): Includes rapid transit (i.e. METRO,
SEPTA Frankford line), LRV’s, trolleys, interurbans,
electrified freight lines using small steeple cab locomotives.
Other examples: South Shore electric operations, Norristown
line, San Diego trolley, etc..
7. Heavy Electric (USA): Includes AMTRAK corridor and Acela
passenger trains using electric powered locomotives (i.e. AEM7s & E60s)
, MARC, SEPTA and NJT electric powered passenger trains. All
electric trains on Metro-North including FL-9’s operating
on third rail. All freight trains hauled by electric locomotives
except those defined in category 6.
8. Diesel Freight (USA): All mainline and heavy branch line freight
trains pulled by diesel locomotives on major or regional carriers
such as CSX, NS, BNSF, KCS, UP, and Ohio Central, etc..
9. Diesel Passenger (USA): All passenger trains pulled by diesel
engine(s). Can include mainline
(AMTRAK), branch line or tourist trains. Also included in this
category are RDC cars and doodlebugs.
10. Shortline and Industrial Diesel Freight (USA): Any freight
train pulled by switcher type or first
generation diesel engines on a shortline or industrial rail
line. Examples are: Maryland Midland, Canton Railroad, South
Branch Valley, M&H, Morristown & Erie, etc..
11. Vintage Day (USA & Foreign): Includes all forms of
motive power pulling passenger , freight and work trains.
Can include both mainline, shortline, industrial and tourist
railroad operations, light
(streetcars, LRV’s) and heavy rail, etc., taken in
daylight in 1995 or earlier. Motive power must be featured
in this category.
12. Vintage Night/Indoor (USA & Foreign): Any subjects
photographed at night or indoors with
artificial or available natural light. Images entered into this
category must appear to have been taken after sunset, with mostly
black skies. Reminder: digitally enhanced images taken in daylight
but altered to look like a night or twilight scene will not be
accepted. Must have been taken in 1995 or earlier.
13. Vintage General (USA & Foreign): Any subjects not covered
in any of the categories described above. Included are railroad
structures, rolling stock, cabooses, coaling towers, work
equipment. Also included in this category are railroad equipment
which does not fall into the above listed categories such as
track speeders, cranes, weed spraying trains, track inspection
trains, Sperry Rail cars and other such unusual non-passenger/non
