The National Railway Historical Society, Washington, D.C. Chapter, Inc. (DCNRHS) presents

The Greenbrier Flyer – Garden Sense

Sunday, April 8 to Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Make your 2018 spring break a historic adventure in style and comfort the way it was done by generations of travelers on your visit to America’s Resort, The Greenbrier: go First-class via Pullman! Instead of enduring crowded highways and endless airport lines, travel round-trip aboard classic 1930s sleeper-lounge private rail car Dover Harbor. Joining us for the memorable trip will be Radio WMAL Garden Sense hosts Jos Roozen and Rick Fowler.

The journey begins with a mid-morning departure on Sunday, April 8 from Washington, D.C.'s historic Union Station behind Amtrak’s Cardinal. Settle into the comfortable rhythms of the Dover Harbor as you a savor a freshly prepared early afternoon meal, followed later in the afternoon with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Enjoy the spring colors of Virginia as we

travel the scenic route of the former Chesapeake & Ohio Railway.  While traveling west on "George Washington's Railroad" our train winds through Virginia’s vineyards and horse country, crosses the rugged Blue Ridge mountains, winds along rivers, and crests the continental divide deep in the Allegheny Mountains before descending to White Sulphur Springs WV, home of America’s Resort, The Greenbrier, in the late afternoon for a three-night stay
(not included, make your reservations directly, see below). A complimentary hotel shuttle will be available to assist you and your luggage to the hotel.

Our return journey begins late-morning Wednesday, April 11th as Dover Harbor departs White Sulphur Springs behind Amtrak’s eastbound Cardinal.   Refreshed from your respite, lunch will be served as our train carries you through a landscape of dark tunnels, swift rivers, steep mountains, farms, fields, forests and small towns. Enroute relax in our spacious lounge as our porters pamper you; enjoy light conversation, play cards, read a magazine, or photo breathtaking scenery. Enjoy cocktails and a light dinner before our scheduled evening arrival in Washington, D.C.

About The Greenbrier and Your Stay

Nestled in the rugged Allegheny Mountains on 11,000+ acres, The Greenbrier is truly America’s resort. Since 1778 this historic getaway, once owned by the C&O Railway, has played host to dignitaries, celebrities, captains of industry,  sports teams, Presidents, and Kings with service and amenities delivering personalized attention that makes every moment memorable. The Greenbrier
offers a cornucopia of available activities and attractions including carriage rides, rafting, fishing, bowling, four golf courses, shopping, skeet shooting, tennis, swimming, off-road driving, falconry, and an elegant casino  unlike any other and open only to hotel guests. World-class dining is offered in 13 different venues.

While there be sure to walk the acres of beautiful gardens and make time for Afternoon Tea. You can even tour Project Greek Island, a secret Cold War bunker built under a then new wing of the hotel in the late 1950s.  Now open for tours the facility was designed to shelter all 535 members of Congress in the event of a nuclear attack and

operated in secrecy until 1992 when the Washington Post revealed the location in an article called “The Last Resort.”

The Greenbrier offers 700 elegant, comfortable, inviting rooms. The Greenbrier has granted our travelers a special rate for a Traditional Room ($199) per room night (plus ~15% tax and $39 per room night resort fee) if booked by March 1, 2018 (quantities are limited) – nightly rates for Deluxe ($239), Superior ($279),

and Draper Suites ($319) are also available – instructions on reserving rooms at the special rate will be provided to you when you make your rail reservation.
