Annual DCNRHS Membership Fund Drive - From Dues to Donations

November 1, 2014

We are all aware that this year has seen a lot of turmoil and change within the National Railway Historical Society. And by now you also know that the volunteer leadership of your D.C. Chapter has embraced these inevitable changes and is moving forward. To emphasize our decision -- to focus on the future of preservation, education, and restoration of railroad history and heritage in our organization -- we are shifting from dues to donations as a basis for membership in DCNRHS.

In the past, we shared the dues model with NRHS, charging a set amount for each member. In 2012, we reduced the local dues to the token amount of four dollars, an insignificant portion of the DCNRHS annual budget. This year we have eliminated dues altogether – you will not receive any request for payment of dues to be a member of the DCNRHS for the coming year.

This letter presents your opportunity to continue your membership or to become a new member of DCNRHS by showing your support in the form of a completely tax-deductible donation. Any individual or family who contributes to the Annual Membership Fund will be members of DCNRHS. It’s that simple…if you want to join us as a 2015 DCNRHS member, all you have to do is make a donation that fits your pocketbook and reflects your personal level of commitment to our mission and goals.

And determining that level of commitment is quite a challenge. Instead of agreeing to a level of support pre-determined by the DCNRHS, you decide how much your membership is worth. With your donation, you actually become a DCNRHS “volunteer” like the officers and directors; the mechanical and service crews who maintain and operate our railcars; the authors and editors of the Timetable; the educators and librarians who maintain the expanding collection housed in the Martin F. O'Rourke Memorial Railroad Library; and the rail historians, published authors, and others who share their experiences and knowledge at our monthly public meetings.

None of this will continue without your generous and continued support. Share in our passion for the past, and dedication to the future. Fill out the information in our membership drive/ donation form (also attached to this article) and send it back to address in the box along with your tax-deductible donation, and become a member of the all-volunteer DCNRHS crew.

Scarlett Wirt, President
