Since 2008 DCNRHS has been teaming with Amtrak for National Train Day on the 2nd Saturday in May. In 2008 and 2009 we opened our Pullman Dover Harbor and offered "Trainiacs" the opportunity to walk through the car and step back into 1930's rail travel, for free! DCNRHS members in period uniforms gave interpretive talks about the car and rail travel from that era. In 2009 over 1500 people toured the car.
National Train Day 2009 saw the Dover Harbor on display in Washington, D.C. Adjacent to the Dover Harbor was the Georgia 300, the car that carried now President Obama to Washington, D.C. from Philadelphia before the inaguration. Dover Harbor was open for display. A variety of other equipment from Amtrak, MARC, and VRE was on display, not to mention a variety of information booths, model train layouts, train clubs, etc. Over 1500 people toured the car.
Dover Harbor was the star pf the equipment display in Philadelphia's 30th Street Station for National Train Day 2010, May 8. Over 1,800 people visited the car. Here are a few photos from the event.
On May 7, National Train Day 2011, our volunteers were out promoting our organization and supporting our mission. B&O Historian John Hankey gave an outstanding tour of the Martinsburg Roundhouse for 34 people participants - Scarlett Wirt served as tour escort and Mike Martin handled ticket sales.
At Washington Union Station DCNRHS had a display table manned by Mike Gingerich, Andy Van Scyoc, Bill Hakkarinen, and Jon Bakke. In Washington, D.C. There were dozens of rail related groups as well as display of Amtrak and vintage rail equipment. Next year we hope to have Dover Harbor on display.
And finally, at Dover Park, Bernie Gallagher, Kevin Tankersely, David Splitt, Joe Banas, John Zabrosky, and Jim were working on the Dover Harbor preparing our vintage Pullman for her trip to Seattle next month.
