Community Service Activities

 
RailCamp - DCNRHS annually sponsors a camper to NRHS' RailCamp.
 
National Train Day - DCNRHS regularly participates in National Train Day and opens our historic Pullman car Dover Harbor for public tours.
 
Supporting our GI's - Participated in a special train to the 2006 and 2010 Army-Navy Gamse.  Took wounded solders and sailors from Walter Reed Army Medical Center to the game in Philadelphia free of charge, along with family members.
Pullman Car Hiawatha  - The Chapter assisted the Center Stage Theatre in Baltimore in late 2000 with research about Pullman cars for it's production Pullman Car Hiawatha
 
Historical Character/Role Interpretation - Chapter members have on occasion served as historical interpretive characters of various roles/people in rail history. On November 12, 1999, one of our Chapter members  served aboard the Northeast Pennsylvania's Heritage Valley Authority Special Train which ran from Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA to Moscow, PA and return. Our member provided the historical interpretive character of a Pullman Porter, complete with uniform. The train was run as an educational introduction for Scranton, PA area 4th graders to railroad history. 
 
Capitol Limited 75th Anniversary - On Wednesday, October 7, 1998 the DOVER HARBOR was a participant in the Capitol Limited 75th Anniversary festivities held in Washington Union Station on Wednesday, Oct. 7, 1998. The car was open for display with other Amtrak and historic B&O equipment. In addition to Amtrak's invited guests, hundreds of Washington DC school children toured the car and got to see what Pullman travel was like.

Union Station Open House - September 25 - 27, 1998 the Chapter participated in the 90th Anniversary Celebration of the opening of Union Station. The Chapter's Pullman, DOVER HARBOR, was opened to the public at no charge for walk-through tours. The Chapter provided the volunteers to man the car. It is estimated about 2,000 people passed through our rolling museum of rail travel in the 1930's during that weekend.

Manassas Railway Festival - The Chapter provides volunteers to assist with crowd control, ticket sales, passenger train operations at the annual Manassas Railway Festival, held at the station in Manassas the first Saturday in June. We also provide on occasion railway history displays.

Operation Lifesaver (OLI) - The Chapter actively supports this program which promotes railroad grade crossing safety. On Chapter excursions we pass out literature and provide on occasion provide direct support for local OLI offices.

Operation RedBlock - Operation RedBlock promotes a drug-free railroad work place. The Chapter has provided volunteers and the use of some of our equipment in support of Operation RedBlock initiatives.

National Association of Railway Passengers - NARP is an organization which promotes rail passenger travel in the United States and serves as an advocate for rail passengers. On occasion we have provided volunteers and the use of some of our equipment in support of NARP programs.
