Appomattox Insider

First Class Private Railcar Journey to

Lynchburg & APPOMATTOX

From Washington, DC, Friday-Sunday, March 28-30, 2014

  SOLD OUT

Travel through time aboard the classic 1930’s Pullman rail car DOVER HARBOR to Civil War Lynchburg, Virginia, a major transportation hub of the Confederacy.

Dover Harbor will leave from Washington Union Station late Friday afternoon, March 28, 2014, with Amtrak’s Northeast Regional #171.  You’ll enjoy cocktails and supper served by our white jacketed stewards.  Upon arrival at Kemper Street Station, we’ll be whisked off to the Kirkley Hotel for a good night’s rest.

Early Saturday morning, we will be picked up by motor coach and taken to Appomattox Court House National Historical Park where Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant, 149 years ago. You will have an opportunity to explore the village on your own before we meet with National Park Service curator Joe Williams for a special Behind the Scenes Tour.  View the war, and some rarely seen artifacts, from this historian’s unique perspective.  After lunch, we’ll head for Lynchburg’s Old City Cemetery where our guides will lead us through the Confederate section, Pest House Medical Museum and Cemetery Center.  We’ll return to the Kirkley Hotel for the evening or you may strike out on your own to see what Lynchburg has to offer.

Sunday morning, we’ll board the Dover Harbor for the trip northward on Amtrak’s Northeast Regional #156.  Spring will be teasing us with early blooms as we pass Charlottesville, Culpeper, Manassas.  Brunch will be served en route and we’ll arrive at Union Station in the early afternoon.
