The National Railway Historical Society, Washington, D.C. Chapter, Inc. presents the Baltimore Streetcar MuseumSaturday April 18, 2015, 11:30AMWant to learn how to run a streetcar? Or to run some classics if you already know how? Or just to learn about one of the best streetcar collections in the country? DCNRHS members and guests will meet up Saturday, April 18, at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum. Museum volunteers will have a variety of historic cars out and ready for us to run and ride for several hours on their trackage, which includes loops at both ends for single-ended cars. Tours of the collection will also be available, and we’ll share a pizza lunch with museum volunteers. The Baltimore Streetcar Museum’s collection is largely devoted to Baltimore cars, from an early horsecar to the PCC that made the final revenue run in the city in 1963. Early single- and double-truck cars are well represented, along with later acquisitions like a handsome Peter Witt car. The collection is unique in that it includes examples of almost every major class of car that ran in a single city. The museum is located at 1901 Falls Road, near Pennsylvania Station, in downtown Baltimore (find directions at the museum’s web site here: http://www.baltimorestreetcar.org/bsmmap1.html). If you choose to take MARC’s new Saturday service from Washington, count on a downhill ten-minute walk to the museum. There’s plenty of free parking if you prefer to drive. (By the way, the museum’s track runs up through what was the old Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad yard, passing beside that railroad’s roundhouse as well as underneath the heavily-trafficked CSX Baltimore Belt line.) We’ll meet at the museum between 11 and 11:30 and enjoy a three-plus hour exclusive, private visit. There’s a limit of 40 people, to give everyone multiple chances to operate cars, so act fast to reserve your place. GETTING THERE Every participant has to provide their own transportation. MARC’s PENN Line provides Saturday service with train #478 departing Washington at 10:02 and arriving at Penn Station at 11:02AM (see MARC’s web site http://mta.maryland.gov/marc-train for more information). From there, the Baltimore Streetcar Museum is a 10 min walk (walking directions will be provided with your confirmation). Ample parking is also available.
PER PERSON PRICES Includes Museum admission, as many streetcar rides as you wish while our group is there, opportunities to operate streetcars, collection tour, free on-site parking and pizza lunch. Member: Nonmember: Per person $30.00 $35.00
