Private Railcar journey celebrating Trains Magazine’s 75th Anniversary

Wednesday, November 11, 2015 – Tuesday, November 17, 2015

  CANCELED

In partnership with Trains Magazine, DCNRHS invites you on a unique journey aboard historic private cars to Milwaukee to celebrate Trains’ 75th Anniversary. Joining us on the high-iron will be Trains Magazine regular contributor John P. Hankey.

Our rail adventure begins Wednesday, November 11 at Union Station in Washington, DC as the Trains Magazine Limited departs behind Amtrak’s Capitol Limited over the route of the famed Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Enjoy snacks and an evening meal along with vistas of the late fall along the Potomac River. As the sun sets roll through Pennsylvania’ mountains to Pittsburgh then speed through the night west over the historic Pennsylvania and New York Central main lines passing farms, cities, and industries, of Ohio and Indiana. Enjoy breakfast before our mid-morning arrival in Chicago at Union Station. Spend the day as you wish exploring the Windy City and stay at your favorite hotel in Chicago (overnight accommodations in Chicago are not included).

Our high-iron adventure resumes Friday, November 13th with a mid-day departure on Amtrak’s Hiawatha service to Milwaukee.  Drinks and light snacks will be served enroute.  Upon arrival you will have the next two days to enjoy Milwaukee, but don’t miss the big event, the Trains 75th Anniversary Gala at the Harley-Davidson Museum Saturday afternoon and evening.  As guests of Trains, admission to this exclusive event is included in your fare.

On Sunday afternoon November 15th, the Trains Magazine Limited will depart Milwaukee on Amtrak’s Hiawatha service for a speedy return to Chicago where you will have another day to explore the City’s many fine shops, restaurants, museums, and attractions. Drinks and light snacks will be served enroute.  You’ll have the evening to spend in Chicago at a hotel of your choosing (overnight accommodations in Chicago are not included), and most of the next day to sightsee.

We’ll rejoin the Capitol Limited at Chicago’s Union Station on Monday evening for our return journey to our Nation’s Capital. Snacks, drinks, and dinner will be served. In the morning enjoy breakfast as we make a daylight crossing of spectacular Sand Patch Grade.
For the overnight portions of the journey we offer two classes of service. In First Class aboard historic 1923 sleeper-lounge Dover Harbor passengers will sleep in classic Double bedrooms with an upper and lower berth, toilet, and sink, have access to a shower, and use of the lounge.  In Slumber Class aboard 1949 Coach Franklin Inn each passengers will have two facing chairs to enable you to stretch out and prop up your feet, an overhead luggage rack (shared), a pillow, and a light blanket.

SPECIAL EVENT: Trains Magazine 75th Anniversary Gala: All fares include admission to this once in a lifetime event at the landmark Harley-Davidson Museum on Saturday, November 14 from 4 – 9 pm. Join past and present Trains editors, columnists, writers, and photographers to celebrate Trains’ legacy of great writing and dazzling photography. The gala includes a cocktail reception, dinner, dessert, a souvenir, special presentations from long-time friends of Trains, and museum admission.

SPECIAL TOUR: Westbound passengers may join John Hankey on Thursday, November 12th for a walking tour of the town of Pullman, which encompasses the surviving Pullman shops and original 1881 assembly buildings.
