The National Railway Historical Society, Washington, D.C. Chapter, Inc. presents a

Pennsylvania Steam Adventure

Everett Railroad, East Broad Top and Rockhill Trolley Museum, August 6-7, 2016

Join us on a private charter for railfans and photographers on the Everett Railroad, a central Pennsylvania shortline that recently returned a handsome 1920 Mogul, No. 11, to steam. Alco built the engine on spec for the sugar trade in Cuba, where oil burners were common, but because of an economic downturn the locomotive failed to sell. Three years later the engine, by then converted to burn coal, was purchased by the eight-and-a-half-mile Narragansett Pier Railroad, in Rhode Island, which operated it until 1937. It was then sold to the nine-mile Bath & Hammondsport Railroad, in New York, where it ran until 1949. The Everett Railroad’s president, Alan Maples, bought it in 2006 and first ran excursions with it less than a year ago. (For more information:

We’ll meet at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 6th at the Everett’s station in Hollidaysburg, PA (from downtown Washington, it’s about a three-hour-and-15-minute drive). The railroad will spot some equipment in the Hollidaysburg yard for early arriving photo-graphers. We’ll have No. 11, the railroad’s just-restored combine, and a coach to ourselves for a run to Roaring Spring, where we’ll get a tour of the historic depot. We’ll also take time out for a boxed lunch (included) and several photo runbys, concluding about 4 p.m.

For anyone interested in making their own hotel arrangements Saturday night in Hollidaysburg or Huntingdon, on Sunday morning, August 7th at 10 a.m. several DCNRHS members who are volunteers for the Friends of the East Broad Top will offer a rare tour of the East Broad Top Railroad’s historic roundhouse and machine shops in Rockhill Furnace, PA (about an hour from Hollidaysburg, half an hour from Huntingdon). The roundhouse is home to six narrow-gauge Baldwin Mikados and a one-of-a-kind 1927 Brill/Westinghouse gas-electric.  The shops preserve a complete collection of early-20th-century machinery powered by a stationary steam engine and a system of overhead belts. In the afternoon, a tour of the adjoining Rockhill Trolley Museum’s collection will be available — including one of the two Chicago North Shore and Milwaukee’s 1941 Electroliners — along with trolley rides on whichever historic car is operating that day.
