The National Railway Historical Society, Washington D.C. Chapter, Incorporated (DCNRHS) presents the

B&O Roundhouse Tour
Saturday, May 7, 2011
Take advantage of an extremely rare opportunity to take a guided walking tour of the B&O Railroad shop buildings at Martinsburg, West Virginia, today known as Martinsburg Roundhouse Center (MRC). The Roundhouse Center includes 13 acres with three B&O Railroad shop buildings. The main attraction is the completely enclosed 1866 cast iron frame roundhouse. It is situated along 1,000 feet of the Tuscarora Creek adjacent to the former B&O mainline (now CSX). The B & O Railroad shops operated until 1988. This site was active early in the Civil War and was the site of the first National Labor Strike of 1877.

The tour will depart from the parking lot adjacent to the Amtrak Station at 229 East Martin Street at 1:00 PM. From there you will cross over the CSX tracks on a walkway to the roundhouse complex.

The tour will be given by prominent B&O historian and scholar Mr. John Hankey. Mr. Hankey will provide a high quality, insightful, in-depth exploration of the history of the facility.

In recent years the shops have not been open to the public. The future of the entire complex is uncertain, so don’t miss this rare opportunity to visit a true treasure in our nation’s railroad history! For more information about the MRC, visit

NOTE: A portion of the proceeds from our tour will go the Berkeley County Roundhouse Authority to benefit the roundhouse complex.
