Join us for an exploration of the railroad attractions of the Town of Sykesville, Maryland, the second horsechanging station on the nascent Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. This local tour will visit three of the town’s railroad oriented attractions, and include lunch at the restored former B&O Station. Our tour begins with a gathering at the Sykesville’s Gatehouse Museum at 11:00AM, where the curator will lead a special tour of railroad items on display. From there, we’ll proceed to downtown Sykesville.
Lunch is the first stop at Baldwin’s Station Restaurant. A delicious three course lunch, consisting of a seasonal field greens salad, sage and mozzerella stuffed breast of chicken entree and chocolate flourless cake dessert, will be served in the beautifully restored station to all tour participants. The 1883 station is one of several designed by architect E. Francis Baldwin for the B&O, and is adjacent to the Old Main Line now operated by CSXT. Perhaps we’ll even get to see a train go by.
After lunch, we’ll stroll over to the former B&P Tower for a tour. This tower was originally located just south of Baltimore’s Penn Station and operated there from 1910 to 1988; the Town purchased and reconstructed it here in 2000 as the Old Main Line Visitor’s Center and Post Office.
We’ll also visit the Sykesville and Patapsco Railway’s model railroads, which are housed aboard a 1910 Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Pullman-built chair car and a B&O Caboose. The S&P is presently home to G, O, HO and N scale model railroads.
