West Virginia Rail Extravaganza
Durbin and Greenbrier Valley RR
Cass (Steam) Scenic Railroad
Green Bank Observatory
Saturday, September 11 - Sunday, September 12, 2010

Join us for a two-day trip to two of West Virginia's premier historic rail venues plus a guided tour of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO). We will meet our chartered motor coach 7:00 AM Saturday at the Fairfax County Government Center parking lot. Lunch (included) will be at the NRAO Cafe at Green Bank. After lunch we will have time to explore the Green Bank Science Center and then be met by our tour guide who will board our bus and give us a detailed tour of the NRAO site and operation.

Mid afternoon we head north to Elkins where we will check into spacious rooms at the new Holiday Inn. From there it is a short walk to the beautifully restored Elkins Depot and our 5:00 PM departure on the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley RR Mountain Explorer Dinner Train. Expect an evening of fine dining inside a historic dining car and a fourˇVhour train ride through small towns and the scenic Monongahela National Forest over former Western Maryland RR trackage. We will make a stop at the inspirational High Falls of the Cheat.

The next morning begins with a deluxe continental breakfast at our hotel and early morning departure for the Cass Scenic RR and the restored historic logging town of Cass. Arriving at 9:00 AM, passengers will have choice of two attractions. One, a tour of the Cass RR shops where the steam locomotives are repaired and serviced and where a graveyard of fascinating equipment can be seen on sidetracks. The other, the Cass Showcase, an audio/visual show of the history of Cass, a railroad and logging museum, and a scale model of the town of Cass and railroad operations.

At 11:00 our train departs for our two-hour ride to the top of Bald Knob. The ride is laced with steep grades and two switchbacks. We will feel the power, see and smell the smoke and hear the sounds from the steam-powered, gear-driven Shays that powered logging trains for fifty years. As we enjoy our provided box lunch the clanking of gears, scream of the whistle, and ever present clacketyˇVclack of the rails will transport us to a different era. At the Bald Knob summit (altitude of 4842 feet) we will make a stop, enjoy a view into two states, and return by 3:30 PM.

We then re-board our coach for the trip home. A meal stop is planned along the way (individual settlement). Our return time is expected to be sometime between 9:00 and 10:00 PM.
