On
To Texas!
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 to Wednesday, June 25, 2008
Relive the grand era of
rail travel in the exclusive luxury and elegant comfort of the
classic Pullman car Dover Harbor on a grand circle tour from Washington
DC to the the heart of Texas—Ft. Worth. Whether you plan to attend
LoneStar Rails-- the 2008 National Railway Historical Society Convention
or simply want a memorable vacation, Dover Harbor will transport
you there in style.
Your trip
departs Tuesday evening, June 10, 2008, from Washington, D.C.'s
Union Station on Amtrak's Crescent. Enjoy supper shortly after
departure, then snuggle into your authentic Pullman berth as our
train glides over the rails through the night. The next morning,
relax, read, or play cards as our train marches through the heart
of the Old South to a Wednesday evening arrival in New Orleans.
There, you'll then have the next day and a half to spend as you
wish. Venture into the French Quarter; tour the antebellum Garden
District homes and enjoy that fantastic New Orleans cuisine! For
the two nights in New Orleans, passengers may stay aboard Dover
Harbor at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, close at hand to
downtown attractions.
Late morning
on Friday, June 13th, the Sunset Limited will carry Dover Harbor
westward across Louisiana into Texas. During the wee hours of Saturday
morning, at San Antonio, we'll switch trains to the Texas Eagle
to head north through the heart of Texas to a mid-afternoon arrival
at Ft. Worth.
For those
who didn't get enough train riding yet, there's an optional addition
to Oklahoma City—Dover Harbor will continue northward on the Heartland
Flyer on Saturday evening. You'll have all of Sunday in Oklahoma
City to explore this city's hip urban culture, classic historic
charm and cowboy culture. Dover Harbor then returns south to Ft.
Worth on Monday morning, June 16th arriving in plenty of time for
the start of the convention activities.
After
the convention draws to a close, Dover Harbor will leave from Ft.
Worth on Sunday afternoon, June 22nd, heading north with the Texas
Eagle through Texas, Arkansas and Missouri. Awake the next day
to see the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, as we head towards an afternoon
arrival in Chicago, where we'll spend the night.
Enjoy
a full day of independent sightseeing in Chicago on Tuesday, June
24th. That evening, the trip's final leg begins when Dover Harbor
departs on the eastbound Capitol Limited. Our train races across
Indiana and Ohio to Pittsburgh during the night. From there, we
climb up over the mountains via the former Baltimore & Ohio route to the Allegheny Summit at Sand Patch; then
onward to Cumberland and along the Potomac River Valley to a mid-day
arrival at Washington on June 25th.
ACCOMMODATIONS
All passengers may enjoy
the comforts of Dover Harbor's lounge. Sleeping accommodations
on this trip are Dover Harbor's Classic Pullman Double Bedrooms,
which sleep two persons in an upper and lower berth. Each bedroom

About the Dover
Harbor
The
Dover Harbor was originally constructed by the Pullman Company
of Chicago in 1923 as a combine, baggage-library car named the
Maple Shade. The eighty-one foot, eighty-seven ton car had a
four section, twelve seat lounge, a barber shop and a baggage
area. The car operated on the Pennsylvania Railroad until 1934
when it was rebuilt to its current configuration of six double
bedrooms, buffet, lounge and renamed Dover Harbor. The car, one
of over eight thousand once owned and operated by the Pullman
Company was then assigned to service on the Michigan Central
Railroad. In 1954, Dover Harbor was assigned to operate between
Washington and Montreal on the Montrealer and the Washingtonian.
Dover Harbor remained in service until December, 1966.
The Washington D.C. Chapter, NRHS purchased the Dover Harbor in 1979. Chapter
members have worked to restore the car to its 1934 appearance. In addition,
its mechanical systems have been brought up to date; the car is currently
certified for travel on Amtrak trains for speeds up to 110 MPH. Today, Dover
Harbor is the last of the Pullman heavyweight revenue service cars still
in main line railroad service. Tax deductible donations for the continued
restoration of the car are greatly appreciated.
In addition to trips such as these, the Dover Harbor is also available for
mobile or stationary charter. For more information, please contact our reservations
agent.
