Experience great fall weather in New York City! This holiday weekend getaway starts with an early morning departure from Washington Union Station on Saturday, October 10th on Amtrak's train #98, the Silver Meteor. As we get underway enjoy a morning libation and a Pullman hot breakfast. Relax in the Dover Harbor&'s comfortable lounge or watch the scenery going by at 100 miles per hour. Our late morning arrival at New York's Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan leaves time for afternoon activities, a short rest at your favorite hotel, then a full evening of New York nightlife.

With this three-day/two-night trip to the city, there'll be plenty of time to relax and enjoy the Big Apple. You'll be able to take a leisurely free ride to see Lady Liberty from the Staten Island Ferry, perhaps visit the exquisite Chinese Scholar's Garden at the Staten Island Botanical Garden while you're there. You may want to take an interpreted tour around Manhattan on water or on land in an open top bus.

Take time to go to the top of the Empire State Building for a spectacular view of the city in daylight or after dark. Have fun visiting the zoo on your way around Central Park, or, perhaps visit one of New York's renowned museums. Grab a hot dog from a street corner vendor, or savor a great meal at any number of the fine dining establishments. Then, stroll up the Great White Way to enjoy a Broadway Show. Discount tickets, are available for most shows at the TKTS Outlet in Times Square the day of the show.

The subway can be your chariot. With an inexpensive allday pass, you can explore from Manhattan to the extents of the system, and perhaps even take a sail across Jamaica Bay, catch some sun at Brighton Beach, or ride the D, F, N or Q trains to historic Coney Island.

Fifth Avenue may beckon you to shop, shop 'til you drop. Tiffany's, Bergdorf's, Saks, FAO Schwartz, or, closer at hand to Midtown and Penn Station, the biggest Macy's of all. Then early in the afternoon of Monday, October 12, 2009 we'll head south with Amtrak's train #19, the Crescent, once again in the comfortable confines of the Dover Harbor. Enjoy good company, more Pullman style service, and late afternoon tea, snacks, or an aperitif on the way back to an early evening arrival in Washington.
